다음은 링컨의 연설문이다. 짧지만 민주주의 기본 원칙을 아주 잘 이야기 하고 있다.

Speech from GettysburgAbraham LincolnFourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation， conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war， testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure. 

We are met on a great battlefield of that war. 

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting－place for those who here gave their lives that nation might live. 

It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But， in a larger sense， we cannot dedicate， we cannot consecrate， we cannot hallow this ground. 

The brave men， living and dead who struggled here have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract.

The world will little note nor long remember what we say here， but it can never forget what they did here. 

It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. 

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us－that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion－that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain， that this nation under God shall have a new birth of freedom， and that government of the people， by the people， for the people shall not perish from the earth.

우리의 선조들은 지금으로부터 87년 전에 자유 속에 잉태되고 모든 인간은 평등하게 창조되었다는 명제에 헌신한 한 새로운 나라를 이 대륙 위에 탄생시켰습니다.

현재 우리는 큰 내전에 휩싸여 있으며 우리 선조들이 세운 그 나라가，다시 말해서 그렇게 잉태되고 그렇게 헌신되어진 나라가 과연 이 지상에 오랫동안 존재할 수 있는지 없는지를 시험하고 있습니다.

오늘 우리는 그 내전의 격전지에 모여 있습니다.

우리는 이 나라를 살리기 위해 목숨을 바친 사람들에게 그 격전지의 일부를 마지막 안식처로 드리기 위해 여기 왔습니다.

그것은 너무도 마땅하고 적절한 우리가 당연히 해야 할 일입니다.

그러나 더 큰 의미에서 볼 때，우리는 이 땅을 봉헌할 수도 없고，신성화하거나 정화할 수도 없습니다.

이곳에서 용감하게 싸웠던 전사자나 생존자들이 이미 이곳을 신성한 땅으로 만들었기 때문에 우리로서는 그것에 아무것도 보태거나 뺄 수가 없습니다.

세계는 오늘 우리가 여기 모여 무슨 말을 했는가를 거의 주목하지도，오래 기억하지도 않을 것입니다.

그러나 세계는 우리 용사들이 이곳에서 한 일에 대해서는 결코 잊지 않을 것입니다.

그들이 여기서 싸워서 그토록 고결하게 진보시킨，그러나 아직 완성되지 않은 그 일을 수행하는 데 헌신되어야 하는 것은 오히려 우리들 살아 있는 자들입니
다.

우리 앞에 남겨진 그 미완의 대업을 다 하기 위해 지금 여기 이곳에 바쳐져야 하는 것은 우리들 자신입니다.

이곳에서 영예롭게 죽어간 이들로부터，더 큰 헌신의 힘을 얻어 그들이 마지막 힘을 다 바쳐 지키고자 한 대의에 우리도 헌신해야 하겠습니다.

우리는 그들의 죽음이 헛되지 않도록 만들겠다고 굳게 다짐합니다.

신의 가호 아래 이 나라는 새로운 자유의 탄생을 누리게 될 것이며，국민의，국민에 의한，국민을 위한 정부는 이 지상에서 결코 사라지지 않을 것입니다.
